Questions

Question,
What would be the best island to stay at close to the surf? location to stay at a starting point for surfing?

Answer

The islands of southern Vavau have a number of places to stay , but they are rather expensive for what you get and none have quality surf in walking /paddling distance (except perhaps over at blue lagoon, good from afar http://www.lowimpactsurftours.com/google-earth-0 ). You will need a boat to make the most of vavau BUT the waves are a not good moorings for yachts etc. so what I have done in the past is camp on Ovaka (no resorts here) and paddles to surf middles and then used local boats (of dubious safety) to surf M&Ms and other waves. Let me know what sort of budget and expectations you have and I can make suggestions accordingly.

opportunity cost

NZD$14K is what a friend of mine is paying to fly his family (him, wife, two under 6) to the UK from NZ. What would that get you if you stopped with family in the tropics instead? 2-3 months in Bali ? a fortnight of French fun in Tahiti ? Two weeks of bare boat exploring in Tonga ?

Ahh opportunity cost!
